Lesson: Dynamic Nature of Business
Year: 10 | Subject: Business Studies | Time Allocation: 100%
Class/Set: ____________ Date/Term: ____________
LO (WALT): To analyse how and why the business environment is dynamic and the impact of change on entrepreneurial activity.
Success Criteria (WILF):
- I can explain the internal and external factors that cause the business environment to change.
- I can describe how technological advancements and innovation lead to the development of new business ideas.
- I can identify how changing consumer needs drive entrepreneurial responses.
1. Starter (10%)
- Activity: 'The Business Graveyard' retrieval practice.
- Explain: Display logos of companies that have struggled or collapsed in the last decade (e.g., Debenhams, Blockbuster, Nokia's mobile division).
- Discuss: Students must identify one common reason why these businesses failed to remain competitive.
- Connect: Introduce the concept of a 'Dynamic' environment—one that is constantly shifting and requires rapid adaptation.
2. Main Activity (75%)
Teacher Input:
- Define: Provide the definition of a 'Dynamic Environment' as a marketplace characterised by rapid change in technology, consumer preferences, and competitive pressure.
- Explain: Outline the three main drivers of change: 1. Technological advancements (e-commerce, social media, automation), 2. Changes in what consumers want (health consciousness, sustainability), and 3. Products/services becoming obsolete.
- Model: Use the transition from traditional taxis to Uber/apps to demonstrate how a market change (smartphone adoption) drove a new entrepreneurial idea.
- Clarify: Distinguish between 'Invention' (creating something entirely new) and 'Innovation' (improving an existing product or process).
Student Task:
- Task A (Categorisation): Create a table categorising 'Drivers of Change' into Social, Technological, and Competitive factors based on the case study of a traditional high-street baker moving to online delivery.
- Task B (Innovation Analysis): Identify a product that has become 'obsolete' (e.g., the DVD player). Write three ways a business could 'innovate' to survive this change.
- Task C (Exam-Style Practice): Answer the following 3-mark question: "Explain one reason why a business might need to adapt to the dynamic nature of the business environment."
- Support: Provide a 'PESTLE' prompt sheet for students who find it difficult to categorise external factors.
- Stretch: Evaluate which driver of change is the most significant for a start-up business in the technology sector.
3. Plenary (15%)
- Check: 'The Hinge Question'—"If a business fails to adapt to a change in legislation regarding environmental packaging, which factor of the dynamic environment is most affected?"
- a) ☐ Technological
- b) ☐ Legal/Social
- c) ☐ Competitive
- d) ☐ Obsolescence
- Consolidate: Use a 'Think-Pair-Share' to summarise why entrepreneurship is a continuous process of responding to change rather than a one-off event.
4. Resources
- Digital presentation with 'Business Graveyard' logos.
- A3 'Drivers of Change' categorisation templates.
- GCSE Business Studies 3-mark exam technique scaffold.
- Mini-whiteboards for the plenary check.

💡 Pedagogical Insights
- Contextual Delivery: For Year 10 students, use contemporary examples they recognise (e.g., TikTok's impact on marketing or the shift towards electric vehicles) to make 'obsolescence' a tangible concept.
- Misconception Alert: Students often confuse 'Invention' and 'Innovation'. Ensure you explicitly teach that innovation can be a small change to a process, not just a brand-new gadget.
- Exam Technique: Focus on the 'Explain' command verb. For 3 marks, students must follow the 'Point, Because, Leading to' structure to ensure full marks for 'Analysis' (AO3).
🔑 Answer Key & Solutions
Task A Answer (Categorisation):
- Social: Increasing demand for home delivery/convenience.
- Technological: Ability to use apps and GPS for tracking deliveries.
- Competitive: Competitors already offering online ordering.
Task B Answer (Innovation Analysis):
- Moving to a streaming subscription model.
- Integrating the technology into smart home hubs.
- Repurposing the hardware for high-fidelity audio enthusiasts (niche market).
Task C Answer (Exam-Style Practice):
- Sample Answer: One reason a business must adapt is due to technological change (1 mark). For example, if a retailer does not offer online shopping, they may lose customers to competitors who do (1 mark). This would result in a fall in market share and potentially business failure (1 mark).
Plenary Answer:
- b) ☐ Legal/Social (Legislation is a legal requirement, and environmental concerns are a social trend).
