Lesson: Prefixes and Suffixes
Year: 3 | Subject: SPaG | Time Allocation: 100%
Class/Set: ____________ Date/Term: ____________
LO (WALT): To know how prefixes and suffixes change word meaning and class.
Success Criteria (WILF):
- I can identify the root word in a complex word.
- I can use the prefixes un-, dis-, and mis- to create antonyms.
- I can use the suffixes -ness, -ment, and -ful to change word classes.
1. Starter (15%)
- Display: Write the root words happy, agree, and play on the board.
- Brainstorm: Invite students to suggest 'parts' we can add to the beginning or end of these words to change them.
- Define: Introduce the term 'root word' as the base of a word that holds the main meaning.
2. Main Activity (70%)
Teacher Input:
- Explain: Define a prefix as a group of letters added to the start of a word.
- Model: Show how un- (unhappy), dis- (disobey), and mis- (misplace) change a word to its opposite or a negative version.
- Demonstrate: Define a suffix as a group of letters added to the end of a word.
- Examine: Show how -ness and -ment turn adjectives or verbs into nouns (e.g., kind → kindness; appoint → appointment).
- Illustrate: Show how -ful turns a noun into an adjective (e.g., joy → joyful).
- WAGOLL: Present a table on the board showing a root word, the added affix, the new word, and the change in meaning.
Student Task:
- Task A (Word Building): Complete the 'Affix Table' by adding the correct prefix or suffix to the root words provided to create new, real words.
| Root Word |

| Sad |
-ness |
__________ |
| Lead |
mis- |
__________ |
| Wonder |
-ful |
__________ |
| Enjoy |
-ment |
__________ |
| Wrap |
un- |
__________ |
- Task B (Sentence Fixer): Rewrite the following sentences by changing the bracketed root word into the correct form using one of today’s prefixes or suffixes.
- The magician made the rabbit (appear) __________.
- Walking in the park brought her much (happy) __________.
- I (understand) __________ the instructions and got the sum wrong.
- The garden was full of (beauty) __________ flowers.
- Task C (Reasoning): Circle the 'odd one out' in this list: dislike, distrust, distant, disagree. Write one sentence explaining why it does not fit the pattern.
3. Plenary (15%)
- Check: Use a 'Hinge Question' on mini-whiteboards: "Which suffix would you add to the word 'excite' to describe the feeling of going to a party?"
a) ☐ -ness
b) ☐ -ment
c) ☐ -ful
d) ☐ -un
- Consolidate: Ask a volunteer to explain what happens to the meaning of 'trust' when we add 'mis-'.
4. Resources
- Root word flashcards.
- Prefix and Suffix 'Sorting Hats'.
- Mini-whiteboards and pens.
- Task Sheet: Word Building and Sentence Fixer.

💡 Pedagogical Insights & Delivery
- Oracy Focus: For Year 3, focus on the sounds of the words. Before writing, ask students to 'say the word, then add the prefix' to hear if it sounds like a real English word. This prevents 'nonsense' formations like 'un-appear'.
- Visual Scaffolding: Use different coloured pens for the root word and the affixes during the Model phase to visually reinforce where the change occurs.
- Spelling Alert: Watch for the 'y' to 'i' change when adding suffixes (e.g., Happy → Happiness). While this is a Year 3/4 objective, some students may need a 'spelling bridge' or reminder that "y changes to i when the suffix comes to say hi."
- Differentiation: For SEND students, provide the affixes on physical stickers or cards to physically move them next to root words before writing.
✅ Answer Key & Solutions
Task A Answer (Word Building):
- Appear + dis- = Disappear
- Sad + -ness = Sadness
- Lead + mis- = Mislead
- Wonder + -ful = Wonderful
- Enjoy + -ment = Enjoyment
- Wrap + un- = Unwrap
Task B Answer (Sentence Fixer):
- Disappear
- Happiness (Note: check for 'i' spelling)
- Misunderstood (Accept 'misunderstanded' as a developmental error, but correct to 'misunderstood')
- Beautiful (Note: check for 'i' spelling)
Task C Answer (Reasoning):
- Odd one out: Distant.
- Explanation: In the other words, 'dis-' is a prefix added to a root word (like, trust, agree). In 'distant', 'dis' is just part of the word and cannot be removed to leave a standing root word.
