Context/Background: Jerusalem has been a site of intense religious significance for centuries. In 1099, Western Christian 'Crusaders' captured the city, but by 1187, the Muslim leader Saladin sought to reclaim it. This scene explores the clashing perspectives of a Frankish Knight and a Muslim Defender during the Siege of Jerusalem, highlighting their shared but conflicting devotion to the Holy Land.
Setting: The stone battlements overlooking the city of Jerusalem, 1187. The air is thick with dust and the sound of distant drums. Characters:
Sir Robert: (Gripping the hilt of his sword, looking out at the horizon) You should never have come to these walls, Saracen. This city was won with the blood of my ancestors nearly a century ago. It is the rightful inheritance of Christendom.
Tariq: (Standing firm, voice calm but resolute) Inheritance? You crossed a vast ocean to claim land that was never yours. We have lived here, prayed at the Dome of the Rock, and tended these olives for generations. To us, you are the 'Franks'—invaders who brought only fire.
Sir Robert: (Angrily gesturing towards the city) We brought order! We protect the Church of the Holy Sepulchre so that pilgrims may travel in peace. It is our sacred duty to defend the place where Christ walked.
Tariq: (Stepping closer to the embrasure) And what of our sacred duty? Jerusalem is Al-Quds to us. It is the place where the Prophet Muhammad—peace be upon him—ascended to heaven. Do you think your faith is the only one that feels the pull of these stones?
Sir Robert: (Sighing, shoulders dropping slightly) My priest told me that to fight for Jerusalem was to wash away my sins. I have travelled thousands of miles in heavy mail, enduring thirst and fever.
Tariq: (Looking at Sir Robert with a hint of pity) We both fight for what we love, Knight. But remember the massacre your people committed in 1099. My people do not forget. Saladin offers a different path—mercy, if you surrender the keys to the city.
Sir Robert: (Hardening his gaze) A knight of the Cross does not surrender easily. We shall see if your 'mercy' holds when the sun sets.
Tariq: (Turning away to check his bow) Then we shall let the history of this city decide our fate.
Epilogue / What Happened Next: In October 1187, Jerusalem surrendered to Saladin. Unlike the Crusaders in 1099, Saladin forbade the massacre of civilians and allowed many Christians to leave the city safely after paying a ransom. This event triggered the Third Crusade, led by Richard the Lionheart, as European powers attempted—and ultimately failed—to recapture the city.

🎯 Pedagogical Pulse:
Task A: Vocabulary Check
Task B: Perspective Analysis
Navigating the complex religious motivations of the Crusades requires moving beyond dry chronologies to confront the visceral reality of medieval belief systems. By contrasting Sir Robert’s Norman pilgrimage with Tariq’s defence of Al-Quds, this Role-Play Script forces pupils to engage with conflicting historical interpretations simultaneously. Structurally, the interactive dialogue reduces the cognitive load associated with dense primary sources, instead using character-driven oracy to scaffold the transition from substantive knowledge to disciplinary analysis. This approach ensures Year 7 learners develop the empathetic foundations necessary for evaluating historical significance while mastering the specific Tier 3 vocabulary of the period.
